Day 1 - By Train to Germany

We depart St Pancras International by Eurostar for Brussels. Our journey continues by Thalys to Cologne for one night at the Hotel Euro Garden or Four Points Hotel close to the Rhine and the city's magnificent Gothic cathedral. (D)

Day 2 - The Rhine Gorge and Bavaria

We travel by InterCity train from Cologne to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, set in an idyllic location amongst the snow-capped mountains of southern Bavaria. The spectacular journey takes us past the sprawling vineyards and fairytale castles of the Rhine Gorge and through the scenic Bavarian countryside, all the more magical in winter. We spend six nights in Garmisch at the Hotel Königshof. (B,D)

Day 3 - To Zugspitze

A wonderful excursion on the Zugspitze Railway takes us towards the summit of the highest mountain in Germany. The train departs from the town centre for the Zugspitzplatt. From here our journey continues by cable car (weatherpermitting) high above the forests to the summit of Zugspitze at 9,718 feet (2,962m), where stunning panoramic views over Bavaria, Switzerland, Austria and Italy await. (B,D)

Day 4 - Oberammergau and Linderhof

This morning we visit Oberammergau, known for its Passion Plays, held every ten years. After a guided tour of the town, there is time to wander through the pretty streets, with elaborately decorated homes featuring historic or fairytale paintings. You are free to enjoy lunch in Oberammergau before we visit Linderhof, the smallest palace commissioned by Ludwig II. Here, we explore the striking Hall of Mirrors, the ornate bedchamber of the King and the Moorish building. (B,D)

Day 5 - A day at leisure

Your day is free, giving you the opportunity to explore Garmisch-Partenkirchen or perhaps visit Munich, the bustling capital of Bavaria, just a short train journey away. Munich has a wonderful collection of museums, art galleries and architectural treasures and some great cafés and restaurants. Take the lift up one of the copper-domed towers of Munich's imposing cathedral, the Frauenkirche, for great views over the city and make sure you do not miss the Hofbräuhaus for a typical Bavarian meal accompanied by the local brew. (B)

Day 6 - Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein

Today's full-day excursion is a highlight of our tour and begins with a visit to King Ludwig's childhood home of Hohenschwangau, where we learn about the history of two fascinating castles. The smaller castle (Hohenschwangau) was built on the original Schwanstein castle site, and from here the King planned his own more impressive castle, a stone's throw away. We continue to this spectacular fairytale castle, Neuschwanstein, bristling with turrets and pinnacles, yet only occupied for 170 days before the King was deposed. (B,D)

Day 7 - Innsbruck in the Austrian Tyrol

We travel south by train on a scenic journey through Bavaria and the Austrian Tyrol to Innsbruck. Nestling amongst the towering mountains, Innsbruck is a historic city of elegant streets lined with fine buildings. Your time here is free to explore the atmospheric Old Town and perhaps visit the Hofburg, the former imperial palace which dates back to the 15th century. The city is also an excellent base from which to explore the surrounding area. Perhaps make the journey by tram to the small town of Igls, situated on a plateau above Innsbruck, or take a trip up to the Stubaital, high above the Brenner Pass. (B,D)

Day 8 - Train to Cologne

We leave Garmisch-Partenkirchen and travel to Munich, where we join the ICE train for the journey to Cologne. On arrival we transfer to our hotel for one night, the Hotel Euro Garden or Four Points Hotel. You may have a little free time before dinner at the hotel to explore this fascinating city and perhaps enjoy a stroll along the banks of the Rhine. (B,D)

Day 9 - Cologne to London

Our morning departure to Brussels connects with the Eurostar service to St Pancras International. (B)
