Coast to Coast of America by train

This adventure is just as much about the journey as it is about the destinations. As you travel through unrivalled landscapes aboard iconic trains, marvel at the natural wonders of the Grand Canyon and the American Rocky Mountains, as well as the man-made wonders of New York, Chicago, San Francisco and more.

Coast to Coast of America by train

  • UK/New York - 1

The ‘Big Apple’ is the first stop on your adventure across America, and your base for the next three nights.

  • New York - 2 to 3

Experience all that this exciting city has to offer as you join your Tour Guide to discover some of its major sights, including Central Park and Fifth Avenue. You will also have plenty of time to explore at your own pace. Perhaps take a walk to see the city’s first skyscraper, the interestingly shaped Flatiron building which is now dwarfed by more modern ones around it; get tickets to see a Broadway show; visit the impressive Grand Central Station; or take the lift to the top of the Rockefeller Centre for the best views of New York’s skyline.

  • Washington - 4 to 5

A scenic train journey south brings you to Washington DC, the purpose-built capital of the United States of America. Here you’ll find even more imposing buildings and landmarks, from the vast dome of the Capitol and the White House to the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial.

  • The Mid-West - 6

Leaving Washington DC behind, you’ll board the Capitol Limited train for the 18-hour, 760 mile journey to Chicago. Dinner will be served on board as you admire the spectacular scenery unfold before you.

  • Chicago - 7

Fondly known as the ‘Windy City’, you’ll be introduced to Chicago’s many highlights before discovering more of it at your own pace.

  • Denver - 8 to 9

Your second train, the California Zephyr, takes you on an overnight journey to Denver. This former gold rush town has plenty to discover and you are sure to enjoy your time here.

  • Rocky Mountain National Park, Big Thompson Canyon & Estes Park - 10

The American Rocky Mountain National Park is truly spectacular, with its vast forests, valleys and streams. Big Thompson Canyon, Big Thompson River and Estes Park share an abundance of wildlife and mountain scenery. You’ll discover all of this and more today with your Tour Guide on today’s coach trip.

  • The Rockies - 11

Experience one of the most beautiful rail journeys in the USA today as you re-board the California Zephyr to travel along the route of the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad, through the Rocky Mountains to Grand Junction.

  • The San Juan Mountains & Silverton - 12

Travel through the San Juan Mountains this morning on your way to Silverton. Once in this former mining town, you’ll board a steam train for the scenic journey along the Durango and Silverton Railroad, originally built to carry gold and silver.

  • Monument Valley And Flagstaff - 13

The rugged landscape of Monument Valley is a pleasure to drive through and quite unforgettable. Passing through Navajo country, you’ll reach the former Wild West town of Flagstaff.

  • Grand Canyon - 14

The ever-changing colours of the Grand Canyon’s ancient walls are breathtaking. Make sure you take the opportunity to experience an exhilarating flight over it so you can truly appreciate its beauty.

  • Walnut Canyon - 15

It has been more than 700 years since anyone lived in the cliff dwellings of Walnut Canyon, but evidence of their homes is still visible today. You’ll board the Southwest Chief train this afternoon, for the overnight journey to Los Angeles.

  • Los Angeles - 16

LA is another of America’s most iconic and exciting cities, and is of course home to the Hollywood movie industry. Discover Mann’s Chinese Theatre and Hollywood Boulevard among other sights as you get a real taste of this vibrant city.

  • San Francisco - 17

The final leg of your exciting rail journey takes you from Los Angeles along the coast aboard the Coast Starlight train to one of the world’s most beautiful cities – San Francisco.

  • San Francisco - 18 to 19

With two days to explore this vibrant city, you’ll wonder where to begin! Your Tour Guide will get you started, accompanying you as you discover some of the city’s major sights, including the Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman’s Wharf and the former prison island of Alcatraz – once home to the notorious Al Capone.

  • San Francisco/UK - 20 to 21

You’ll have seen and experienced so much, but your American adventure ends here as you board your return flight to the UK, arriving the following day.
