The Irish Rail Trail

From the prehistoric landscapes of the Burren to cosmopolitan Dublin, this wonderful rail adventure will introduce you to the best of this captivating country and its charismatic people.

The Irish Rail Trail

  • UK/Dublin - 1

After the ferry crossing from Holyhead, your adventure begins with a two night half board stay in Dublin.

  • Dublin - 2

Enjoy a guided city tour to introduce you to this most friendly of capital cities. You'll see the graceful Custom House, the iconic Ha'penny Bridge, spanning the River Liffey, and historic Christ Church Cathedral as well as a tour of the magnificent State Apartments in Dublin Castle. Then take the rest of the day to explore at leisure.

  • Cork & Killarney - 3

Board your train - sit back, relax and absorb the passing gentle countryside as you travel south to Cork. From here you'll continue to the colourful harbour town of Cobh to visit the Cobh Heritage Centre.

This afternoon you visit the acclaimed Blarney Castle, one of Ireland's great treasures. Perhaps try to kiss the famous Blarney Stone, said to bless those who do with the gift of the gab! Your journey continues west to Killarney in County Kerry, where two nights' half board accommodation has been arranged.

  • The Ring of Kerry - 4

A day of spectacular scenery is in store today as you drive around the stunning Ring of Kerry. The scenic drive skirts Macgillycuddy's Reeks, a soaring mountain range at the heart of this unspoilt region. You'll pass picturesque Glenbeigh, at the mouth of Dingle Bay, and visit the pretty town of Sneem.

  • Lisdoonvarna - 5

Your journey north today takes you first to historic Tralee, at the head of Tralee Bay, and Bunratty Castle, overlooking the River Shannon.

Journey's end today is the charming spa town of Lisdoonvarna, where you'll spend the next two nights.

  • The Burren & Cliffs of Moher - 6

Another day of captivating scenery is in store as you travel towards the coast and visit the Burren. The austere limestone hills of this historic landscape are home to a network of bubbling streams and calm lakes. Later you'll visit the majestic Cliffs of Moher, a landscape little changed for millennia. Looming for some 700 feet above the turbulent waters of the Atlantic, the cliffs are a bird-watchers paradise; puffins, razorbills and kittiwakes may be seen here. On a clear day, the cliffs offer stunning views as far as Galway, Kerry and the Arran Islands.

  • Galway & Connemara - 7

Today you transfer to Galway, where you'll have some free time to explore this most relaxed and appealing of cities. Later you'll explore the rugged beauty of Connemara National Park, where you might be lucky enough to see wild Connemara ponies amongst the granite mountains and peat bogs. Your visit to Connemara will take you through Maam Cross to the Benedictine Kylemore Abbey. Your return to Galway takes you through more of the picturesque scenery of the region.

  • Dublin - 8

Enjoy another relaxing scenic train journey as you return to Dublin. Perhaps sample some of the city's most famous export, Guinness, in one of the many bars and restaurants on the world famous O'Connell Street.

  • Dublin/UK - 9

Your holiday comes to a close today as you take the ferry journey back to the UK and return home.
