Scenic Welsh Railways

  • Llandudno - 1

Llandudno, where you stay for the next four nights, is a delightful seaside resort with grand seafront hotels, promenades and the longest pier in Wales. One of the attractions of the town is the Great Orme Railway, a mountain tramway offering spectacular views across the bay and beyond. Celebrating its centenary in 2002, the tramway is one of only three cable-hauled street tramways still in existence worldwide, so be sure to take a ride on this rare treasure while you can. You can also experience Llandudno from a different viewpoint with a ride on the cablecar to the summit of the Great Orme – at one mile each way it is the longest such journey in the UK and a memory that will stay with you for years to come.

  • Snowdonia - 2

Continue your rail adventure by following the coast to Caernarfon and Caernarfon Castle, whose construction began in 1283. This commanding and majestic castle was designed to echo the walls of Constantinople, and history comes alive here, with lofty wall walks, regal towers and unusual architecture just beckoning you to explore.

After discovering the charms of this romantic setting join the Welsh Highland Railway to travel into Snowdonia National Park. This delightful steam train navigates around bends, up hills and through the Aberglaslyn Pass to Porthmadog, from where you join the oldest independent railway in the world. The Ffestiniog Railway boasts another stunning steam locomotive that takes you deeper into the Snowdonia National Park, finally arriving at Blaenau Ffestiniog, a former capital of the Welsh slate mining industry.

You return to your hotel in Llandudno via the pretty town of Betws-Y-Coed, surrounded by dense woodland and magnificent mountain country. The beauty of the area is enhanced by cascading waterfalls, deep valleys, and ancient bridges, and you cannot fail to be touched by its beauty.

  • Llanberis - 3

Today after a drive from Llandudno to Llanberis at the foot of majestic Mount Snowdon. You'll step aboard the narrow gauge steam railway at Gilfach Ddu for the picturesque five mile return journey. En route, you'll pass the 13th century Dolbadarn Castle and Llanberis' twin lakes. Returning to Llanberis you'll enjoy a little free time, perhaps taking a trip on the Mount Snowdon Railway (not included), or even visiting Electric Mountain – a power storage station built in the core of a mountain. Alternatively, you could relax with afternoon tea in a café.

  • Pwllheli - 4

Continue your nostalgic steam journey as you head to Machynlleth to join the Cambrian Steam Railway. Follow the coastal tracks, passing amazing landscapes such as Cardigan Bay, historic Harlech Castle and the spectacular Snowdonian Mountains, as well as crossing the famous Barmouth bridge. After this picturesque journey you can discover the charms of the seaside market town of Pwllheli with its two beaches and impressive marina – if you are lucky you may be able to attend the annual Llyn Land and Seafood Festival to get a taste of real local produce.

  • Llandudno - 5

After enjoying a leisurely breakfast it's time to leave Llandudno to make your way home.
