We stay for the next four nights at the Hotel Deutscher Hof and enjoy dinner at the hotel this evening. (E,D)

Day 2 - Cochem

Today we depart by rail to Cochem, the Moselle Valley's most visited town. Cochem's most famous attraction, its 1,000 year-old castle, has Renaissance and Baroque furnishings, carefully chosen during the castle's 19th century restoration. Cochem's Old Town is a quaint square featuring half-timbered buildings and charming shops. We enjoy a wine tasting of the region's famous varieties. (B,D)

Day 3 - Excursion to Bernkastel-Kues

After breakfast we embark on a cruise to Bernkastel-Kues, the famous 700-year-old wine town. Setting sail from Trier we meander along, passing pretty villages and famous wine regions. Bernkastel features a lovely market square adorned with fountains and surrounded by half-timbered houses. The Renaissance City Hall, built in 1608, the church of St Michael and the ruins of the Castle of Landshut, towering above Bernkastel, are other notable attractions. We return to Trier by coach. (B,D)

Day 4 - A day at leisure in historic Trier

Today is at leisure for you to explore Trier, Germany's oldest city. The Porta Nigra, the largest Roman Gate north of the Alps and a designated UNESCO World Heritage site, is simply not to be missed. Legend has it that Napoleon Bonaparte decided not to destroy the gate, which had been converted into a church, when informed about its ancient Roman origins. Other options include visits to the birthplace of Karl Marx, the Roman Baths and Amphitheatre, the Cathedral of St Peter and the Church of Our Lady. (B)

Day 5 - To Brussels and London

We leave Trier by train for Brussels via Luxembourg. Here we join the Eurostar service, arriving back into St Pancras International after a complimentary meal and drinks served on board. (B,E)
