- UK/Tokyo - 1 to 2
Following your flight from the UK you will arrive in Tokyo on your second day. Relax after the journey at your hotel, where you will stay for three nights. Throughout the holiday your Tour Guide and local Specialist Guides will be on hand to share their knowledge and ensure you experience the real Japan. - Tokyo - 3
One of the world’s great cities, Tokyo is an amazing kaleidoscope of colour, where ultra-modern skyscrapers rise from bustling streets. Amid the 21st century non-stop lifestyle, pockets of tradition and serenity can still be found. Shrines and temples provide a haven from everyday life, places where time-honoured traditions still hold sway. A full day tour will introduce you to the city. Visit the Asakusa Kannon Temple, dedicated to the Goddess of Mercy, drive through Akihabara, also known as Electric Town, where you can buy virtually any gadget, and see the gabled-roofed Imperial Palace. Delve into the Ginza District, famed for its superb shopping and take a ride to the top of the Tokyo Tower for panoramic views over the city skyline. - Tokyo - 4
Today you are at leisure in Tokyo. Alternatively, why not join your Tour Guide to visit the town of Nikko, north of Tokyo, where you will visit the Toshogu Shrine and the stunning Kegon Waterfall, which has a 97 metre drop and is surrounded by beautiful scenery. - Mount Fuji, Lake Ashi & Hakone - 5
The snow capped volcanic cone of Mount Fuji has been portrayed in countless works of Japanese art and literature. Weather permitting, drive up to one of the five station viewing points and discover more of the mountain on foot. Lake Ashi fills the crater of an extinct volcano, join a cruise and discover a landscape of dense forests cut through with sparking waterfalls and dotted with steaming hot springs. Take a ropeway ride to Owakudani and join the short walking trail through steam vents and bubbling pools. The views of Mount Fuji and Lake Ashi from the hotel where you stay tonight are superb and a relaxing dip in one of the open air hot springs is the perfect way to end the day. - Kyoto - 6
Your Japanese exploration starts in earnest as you board the world-famous Shinkansen, better known as the Bullet Train, for the first of three journeys. Your first super-express journey is to Kyoto, the spiritual capital of Japan, where you stay for two nights. Immerse yourself in a glorious concentration of treasures on a tour this afternoon. Visit the Kiyomizu Temple and admire the stunning mountain views from the vast veranda; at Sanjyusangendo Temple see the extraordinary 1,001 carved wooden statues. Stroll through the classical Japanese gardens of the Imperial Palace and visit the Fushimi Inari Shrine where thousands of orange torii gates wind over the hills. - Kyoto - 7
Spend another day amidst the sights and sounds of Kyoto. Visit the gold-leafed Kinkakuji Temple, perfectly reflected in the still waters of the surrounding lake; explore the fortified Nijyo Castle; and experience the tranquillity of the Heian Shrine. The afternoon is yours to discover more of the city. Visit Ryoan-ji and contemplate the serenity of its famous Zen rock garden, seek out the ancient streets of Gion, immortalised in Memoirs of a Geisha and visit the Nishiki Market, with its colourful stalls of Japanese delicacies. - Hiroshima - 8
Board the Bullet Train bound for Hiroshima and an overnight stay. A ferry takes you across the waters where the ‘floating’ red Torii Gate, symbol of Japan, rises out from the sea. Your destination is the forest clad island of Miyajima, a haven for deer and one of the most beautiful settings in Japan. The Itsukushima Shrine is a Mecca for pilgrims and the views from the summit of the sacred mountain are spectacular. Hiroshima is best known for the tragic events of 6th August 1945 when it was decimated by the first atomic bomb. Today the city is a thriving metropolis and a centre for peace. Visit the moving exhibition at the memorial museum and the park dedicated to the horrors of that day, where a flame burns beneath an arched cenotaph. - Osaka - 9
This evening there is the opportunity to enjoy a fugu dinner at a local licensed restaurant. Fugu, or blowfish as we more commonly know it, can only be prepared by chefs who have trained for at least 10 years to gain their licence. This quality and care has earned fugu the status of a delicacy in Japan. - Osaka/UK - 10
The history of Osaka Castle spans centuries and the ancient walls have witnessed many wars and Imperial dynasties. Today the castle dominates the centre of the city and a visit is included before you travel to the airport for your return flight to the UK.
