Day 1: London to Cochem
We depart from St Pancras International by Eurostar to Brussels. We then continue to Luxembourg by high-speed train through the beautiful rugged countryside of southern Belgium. Here we change for Trier then transfer to a local train to Cochem and our
hotel for a three night stay.
Day 2: Free day in Cochem
The town of Cochem is located in the most romantic part of the Moselle Valley, where the river curves between the snow-capped Eifel and Hunsrück mountain ranges, and is dominated by the magnificent Reichsburg Castle situated on a precipitous rock high above. Cochem is a joy to behold, with its narrow streets, winding alleyways, lovingly restored half-timbered houses and medieval town gates. Cochem's Christmas Market is just as beautiful as the town itself, with festively decorated wooden chalets selling all the gifts and crafts you could wish for.
Day 3:Trier
Today we travel by train to another pretty Moselle town. Trier is the oldest city in Germany, and was founded over 2,000 years ago. There is a wealth of well-preserved Roman and medieval buildings including the Porta Nigra - one of the best-preserved Roman gates anywhere in Europe. The enchanting Trier Christmas Market can be found in the historical market square, which is set against the backdrop of the magnificent Cathedral, which dates back to Roman times. The stalls offer an extensive range of hand-made goods and crafts, including Christmas decorations, wooden toys and much more. Sample the wonderful local produce on offer such as bratwurst sausages, potato pancakes, sweets, hot tea and mulled wine, as you wander along and watch the choirs and puppet theatres perform.
Day 4: Cochem to London
We leave Cochem by local train, travelling up through the magnificent Rhine Valley and along the banks of the mighty river. At Cologne we join the high-speed service through to Brussels, where we change for our Eurostar to St Pancras International, arriving late afternoon.
